City Wide Clean Up
Spring is here and the City’s gearing up for “City Wide Clean Up”. This annual event is held in conjunction with Franklin county’s free “Communities” landfill weekend (free roll-off dumping on April 16th, 17th and 18th) and is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th. Again, we’d like to encourage all of our citizens to participate in the clean up and make our city a cleaner, safer and even more beautiful place to live.
Beginning Thursday, April 15th, the City will have large roll off dumpsters available at the public works department parking lot located at 730 South Main Street to accommodate your trash and salvage items. There will also be designated area for a brush pile, tree limbs and yard debris (just during city wide clean up).
The County transfer station has provided us with a list of restricted items that you will not be allowed to bring to the city’s dumping location. These restricted items are: Boats, tires, oil, gas tanks, burned trash residue, liquids and household hazardous waste, such as paint, batteries, chemicals, etc.
Household hazardous waste, such as paint, batteries, chemicals, etc. Are collected daily at no charge at the Franklin county Noxious Weed Dept. 2017 S Elm St. Ottawa, Ks, 785-229-3170 Monday thru Friday 7:00-3:00. The transfer station will open to the public on Friday, April 23th from 8:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m and Saturday, April 24th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for free dumping such as trash, brush, scrap metal and construction/demolition materials.
If you are unable to take your trash and salvage to the public works department roll off area, you may call City Hall at 883-2296, Mon-Fri 8:00-12:00, 1:00-5:00 p.m. and request assistance. The city staff will compile a list and on Saturday, April 10th , volunteers will pick up trash and salvage items that have been placed on the curb. We’d like to limit curb service to residents who are unable to deliver their items to dumpsters provided at the public works parking lot. Our volunteers are also asking that you please have your item out to the curb either Friday night or early Saturday morning ( not later than 8:00 a.m.) to help them expedite the process.
As we go into summer, let’s continue to make every effort to make Wellsville a place where we can be proud to live. Mow your lawns as frequently as possible. Grass over 10″ is a code violation and abatement fees can be very severe. Keep your yards free of trash, salvage, inoperable, wrecked or unregister vehicles, these are all code violations and abatement of them can consist of expensive fines, tow charges or both.
In closing, we’d like to encourage you to support our local businesses, shop Wellsville first, by doing so, you’ll help keep our community thriving and growing.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Mayor Bill Lytle & City Council
